Hello everyone,

This being my first post on rohinhoods, let me briefly introduce myself. I am a Computer Science graduate and an MBA from Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi, at present I am working on building a new venture with four team-mates. It has been around 3 months when I quit my first post-MBA job with Vodafone in a pursuit to do something that I enjoyed more than what I was doing, and since then quite a few people have asked me why did I quit my job, this post is an answer to that.

I had joined Vodafone less than 2 years ago and had started working as an ASM barely 9 months ago. I was lucky to get Ahmedabad (City+semi rural) as my territory, perhaps the most challenging and visible territory in the Gujarat circle, and I was performing reasonably well. From being placed as one of the bottom-most territories for past many years, my team was able to get us to become the best territory in Gujarat for the last quarter, and it wasn't just one or two members doing well, each one of my team members had contributed to it by performing at his absolute best. I liked and respected my team and I am confident that the feeling was reciprocated by them. I was reasonably confident of a good rating and a promotion for myself as well as most(if not all) of my team.

So, I understand that from most peoples' perspective it was an odd decision, which was even more odd considering I wasn't switching for a higher salary rather looking to 'build' a start-up(employee/founder title was and is irrelevant for me). But, if you think from my perspective, the answer was as straightforward as any because of the following three reasons.

1) I strongly believe that most people earn a major portion of their money in last 10 years of their life, and gains a major portion of their learning in the first 10 years. Even though I was doing pretty well in Vodafone and earning okay, I didn't think I was learning enough or was being challenged enough.

2) I think a person is shaped by the people he interacts(works/lives/plays etc) with more than anything else, and so I've always placed a very high emphasis on the kind of people I work with. So much so that whenever people ask me which sector/company/profile I want to work in, my answer is inadvertently the same, I want to work with a great team and most of the other criteria have little relevance for me(I accept that every time I answer this, people look at me as someone who has no clarity in life).

Now, there were quite a few awesome people in Vodafone, from whom I did learn a lot, but in general there was a good deal of dissonance between my core value system and theirs, e.g. I believe in giving my team a lot of independence and in-turn ask for complete accountability, I always acted just as a supporter, someone who can make their problems go away while they focus on their tasks, but in larger companies most people believe in micro-managing, the common belief being that the more pressure you put on someone the better they perform. So, even though I had and have much respect for my seniors and colleagues, I knew that I couldn't become like that and had to move on.

3.) I am by nature an impatient person and I like to move things quickly, for me short term success or failures are immaterial as long as you are experimenting and learning, but in a larger organization decision making is often multi-layered and unidirectional, and thus things don't move as quickly. Actions are judged purely by results and hence people avoid taking risks and prefer taking short-cuts.

And so even though I wasn't sure of what I wanted to do, I was sure that this was definitely not it, and decided to take a break to figure out what exactly I do want to do.

So many contrasting thoughts, all of them look absolute pearls of wisdom and yet they contrast as much with each other as day and night, head and tail, sreesanth and mcgrath.

Every person dead or alive, has faced this question more than once in his life. Whether he should give more effort for something which is not working out by the effort that he has already put into it. Whether he should wait another year for that elusive brand wimwi (or joka or xl for that matter), whether he should control his urge to earn his own money and to study for two more years to do a post graduate degree, whether he should cut the losses in the investment that he has made in ICICI stocks, whether he should ask his son to get a job who has failed in his attempts at IAS twice, whether he should try one more time to make a relationship work when he has failed miserably earlier...

In all that I could find out, there is no perfect answer to this. The world often sees the victors, it will see at a Newton and tell you that he failed a thousand times before inventing a bulb but it will also see at a Sachin Tendulkar and tell u that even though he wanted to be a fast bowler he gave that up to be the batting maestro that he is.

The world is cruel, it looks up-to people who have succeeded and asks u to emulate them but it conveniently overlooks several hundred others who would have done the same things as these champions and failed miserably, it forgets there are still others who did the exactly opposite thing and still went on to make their mark.

There are people who cut their losses of a investment and learned from their mistakes, there are others who stayed on and the same investment gave them millions, but more than both of these are the number of people who chose either of the two options but turned out big losers.

I remember watching the movie Girl Next Door, and I remember the phrase "juice is worth the squeeze" the question is how much do u squeeze to see if the juice is really worth it....Ranjeet Pratap Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12281032997703397175noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7194097931688959515.post-22220595750052053982011-01-19T23:34:00.001+05:302011-01-19T23:36:57.001+05:30बहुत दिन पे है हमने लिखा, और क्या :P// Any resemblance to any person dead or alive is merely co-incidental.
I will definitely be biased towards Indian B-schools and you are free to dis-agree, just don't hope that you will write anything you want and I will allow it to be published here or reply it.

Now lets start the review, with a few parameters listed below.
1.) Placements :

Instead of directly comparing the placement on basis of Dollars given to a person, the more appropriate way would probably be its comparison with the average salary of that particular country in which the college exists. This is because, like everything else, Income is relative and its importance can only be determined in relative terms.

Median Salary of a person in US = $32,140 // 46,716 GDP per capita.
Median Salary at Wharton : 145,000
Median Salary at Harvard : 130,000
Median Salary at Kellogg : 133,000

So, an average person from these colleges earns about 4-5 times that of an average US citizen.

Avg. Salary of a person in India = Rs. 37,490 // this is GDP per capita.
Median Salary in IIM A : Rs. 12,17,000
Median Salary in FMS : Rs. 11,47,000
Median Salary in XLRI : Rs. 12,12,000

So, an average person from these colleges earns about 30 times that of an average Indian citizen. Agree that the standard of living depends on other things like the city in which you live as well, but I leave that analysis to the reader.

2.) Peer group :

Now there are two factors to be considered here, i.) The quality of the pear group and ii.) the diversity.

As far as point (i) is to be considered, one can have 100's of examples where people who haven't been able to secure an admission into an IIM(or other institute of their choice), joined world's best Management Institutes like Wharton,Harvard or Kellogg. And though this proves no point but this surely indicates that the people getting admission in the best Indian Management Institutes are at par with the World's best if not more.

for point (ii.) An obvious answer to this point might be that "Indian B-Schools lag far behind their international counterparts in this respect". But I ask you to think a little on this point, its absolutely correct that the number of International students in Indian B-Schools is meager, but just think about the composition of an average class in an IIM, they have students from all over India, and India in itself has so much diversity that one should be able to learn a lot from it barring the international exposure.

3.) Faculty :

This is one point where I will give no data, and that is because of two reasons.
i.) Indian B-Schools lag far behind their foreign counterparts in this respect, so you may safely stop reading this post and go back.

and the actual reason.
ii.) I believe that teaching is one thing which is related more to passion and involvement than to degrees one owns and papers one has published. Though it is very much unlikely that too many of you will agree to this, but more often than not I have seen people who weren't very good in academics, didn't have flashy degrees were far better than those with degrees like Ph.D and a lot papers accredited to them, I won't use names but I have a lot many examples in my Institute (I am an undergraduate) and I am sure, you must have faced some similar examples.

And from what I've heard is faculty at most good Indian B-Schools is GREAT to say the least.

4.) Alumni :

This is one point where foreign B-Schools are heads and shoulders above their Indian Counterparts. But Indian B-schools are catching up, and this is strictly my opinion.

5.) Future Opportunities :

This is the most important point according to me, for any MBA aspirant, one has to decide various things such selecting the best B-schools depending on his/her priority and these priorities are subjective and depend on the individual's perspective.

When you are trying to get an job in India / Indian company, and IIM degree is almost unmatched while in US the same degree may have little value, and the ditto holds for the foreign degrees, not many foreign MBAs have succeeded in Indian/Asian markets.

If only aim of one's life is to earn more and more money, or he/she doesn't mind living abroad for the major part of his/her life, probably foreign MBA is a better choice for him/her.

But for people like me, who want to come back to the place they were born, and do something here, nothing beats an Indian MBA and if that's from a top-tier college its just plain awesome.

P.S -> I am not saying that I am in any way more patriotic than those who are settling abroad, its just that my way of thinking is a little different from theirs.

P.P.S -> I have no credentials to boast of(as of now), I am just an undergraduate student and a CAT aspirant, so you can very well dissect every-point that I made, and I would love to see if I can give a reply to that OR you might even be able to convince me to change my opinion BUT please try to be a little polite and courteous else don't be surprised if you can't see your comment published....Ranjeet Pratap Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12281032997703397175noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7194097931688959515.post-43279666361143170132009-11-04T22:25:00.000+05:302009-11-05T00:05:28.608+05:30Some great hollywood movies. In past few days, I have watched quite a few old hollywood movies and they really proved why OLD is indeed GOLD.

My choice of movies in not very good, and more often than not I don't agree too much with the critic's ratings; I have loved a movie called august rush, while movie like million dollar baby or Goodfellas were just fine for me.
Luckily this time, our thinking matched, and I am sure if u watch these movies, you will feel the same.

Casablanca : This 1942 classic, is considered to be the best american romantic movie of all time by AFI,is ranked 11 in imdb, is considered to be the best screenplay ever written by the Writers' Guild of America, and has won 3 oscars (not that they matter much to me) and all for the right reasons.

Right from the oh-so-famous screenplay, to the great acting by all the star-cast and how can I miss the stunning beauty of Ingrid Bergman.

My verdict : A beautiful story which unveils itself every fifteen minutes, a lovely classic. 8.5/10

Who should watch it : Every-one who loves romance, who believes in the age old saying of most beautiful things being the simplest of all.

Who shouldn't watched it : For whom hollywood is all about, action, pace and famous stars(presently famous).

Rocky : A 1976 cult movie, which is the perfect example of how an underdog can give the best a run for his/her money.
Sylvester Stallone is almost perfect in the role of Rocky Balboa, the cool, composed and friendly chap who is a boxer of high reputation, one who NEVER accepts defeat, as he says in Rocky 3 " To defeat me, he has to kill me". It may not be the best movie on boxing but it surely is among the most beautifully made inspirational movies (though its considered to be more of a sports movie) the others including The Shawshank Redemption.

The whole series of 6 movies, is watchable with the first(Rocky), third (Rocky III) and the last (Rocky Balboa) standing heads and shoulders above the rest. And then there is the very famous dialogue " Life ain't all sunshine ...." One of the best dialogues ever spoken in a hollyood movie (that is among the ones I saw).

My Verdict : A decent movie, watchable for every youngster who is dreaming high and for every-one who wants to see how a man can fight against all odds, just on the basis of his will power and determination to emerge as The winner. 8/10

Who should watch it : All those who believe on themselves more than they do on luck, all action/sport movie fans.

Who shouldn't watch it : Those go by the words of critics and ratings and nothing else.Ranjeet Pratap Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12281032997703397175noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7194097931688959515.post-63476497619797760522009-09-05T19:34:00.004+05:302009-09-05T20:39:38.798+05:30A few good movies I watched in last week.Mughal-e-Azam :

I first saw this movie a few days back, and from that day(which ain't more than a month back), I have already watched this movie at-least a dozen times and am sure that I would be watching it a couple of dozen times more in coming days. And this is when I rarely see a movie twice, and have never ever seen a movie thrice i.e. except for this one.
From the very moment the movie starts, it is just perfect. The actors, the music, the plot and add to that the madhubala ; man, I haven't saw anybody or anything like that, she is the most beautiful scene my eyes have ever seen.

My verdict : An outright classic. 10/10
Who should watch it : If you are a fan of beauty, or a person who watches movies more with his heart than with his heart, music lovers for some of the greatest songs filmed in Indian movie industry, who want to watch how a movie can be so good that a critic like me isn't able to find a flaw in it.
Who shouldn't watch it : People who think bollywood is all about masala movies or copying hollywood.

12 Angry men :

I watched this black and white classic today, a movie which has been almost entirely shot in one room, except for two small scenes, a movie in which no names are used except for the two names used in the last scene, a movie which basically has 12 characters, all having almost the same screen time and still it is able to do justice to all of them.
imdb rank 7, this movie is a great watch for all those who are willing to watch it patiently for a hour and half, the movie builds excellently upon a very simple plot based on some of the greatest performances in the history of hollywood, the role of Juror(jury no. 8) played by Henry Fonda is the 28'th best role ever played according to bfi.

My verdict : A slow moving classic. 8.5/10
Who should watch it : People who have actually seen a good number of hollywood movies, who can patiently see the movie and enjoy the performances.
Who shouldn't watch it : People who prefer fast paced movies over slow n sensible ones.[ho, ho, ho I belong to this category]

Psycho:

Considered among the greatest horror movies of all times is another masterpiece from Alfred Hitchcock, a fast paced movie which captures the attention of the viewer from the word go and is able to shake him/her at a few times, I am not a big horror/suspense movie fan but still it was an enjoyable experience.

My verdict : A good n fast paced movie. 8.5/10
Who should watch it : Horror/suspense/thrill movie fans, people who want to see one of the most talked about scene in hollywood history "the bathroom scene".
Who shouldn't watched it : guys(n gals) with weak hearts, people who hate horror/thrill/suspense.

P.S. = > These are my personal opinions and don't necessarily agree with the critics reviews.
May be I will be writing about more movies and you shall notice that scoring a 8.5 on my scale is actually an accomplishment :P .Ranjeet Pratap Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12281032997703397175noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7194097931688959515.post-27999103950802602282009-08-03T10:15:00.004+05:302009-08-03T12:18:22.323+05:30Bollywood Vs HollywoodI accept that I have a little too much love for India and Indian things, may be some-times even if its wrong. But then this is how I (and I believe I am echoing the emotions of a lot of people here) I want to be.
So today when my roomie made a statement that No Indian actress knows acting, I couldn't take it.. and then while surfing Internet, somehow I got an article on how Bollywood is a poor cousin of Hollywood, the two incidents in a row compelled me to do some research on the topic and come-up with a comparison of Bollywod and Hollywood. Since I know that if I will write some subjective matter I will be biased towards bollywood and hence I am just writing some facts(of-course the ones I like :D) which will try to verify if the so called inferiority of Bollywood actually exist. The readers are always welcome to pour in their views and comments.

Lets first take a look at the finances and viewership

Now, if you look carefully you will observe that this data is of 2002, and it is provided by business week.
Let me illustrate a bit on how and why bolywood movies have 3.6 billion tickets sold vis a vis 2.6 billion tickets in hollywood, and still it generates a meager revenue in comparision to its american counter-part.
The major market for Bollywood movies consists of the following countries.
India, Pakistan, Russia. and the following regions south america, Africa(Kenya, SA, Egypt etc), Eastern europe(Bulgaria, Latvia etc) and Middle east.
One thing common in almost all these regions and/or countries is their financial condition, these all are either developing or under-developed countries where the money that an average person spends is far too little than in comparision to the major markets for hollywood movies (read USA,Britain,France etc).
plz note that this is the data when Avg. marketing was just $ 500,000 and the corporate involvement in bollywood at that time was little, so when this money increases the annual growth rate is bound to increase.

__________________________________________________________________
Now lets start the game, we shall analyze the different allegations and see how much truth do they hold
__________________________________________________________________
People ususally claim that bollywood is just a copy-cat and hollywood is all original, no matter its about the music or the storyline or drawing inspiration lets have a look.
Inspired Music
Devo<a said to be a remake of Steven Spielberg's ET and and the close encounters of another world, but then no we love hailing everything western coz we don't see that these two in turn were inspired by Alien an incomplete work of Satyajit ray based on his Bankubabur Bandhu.

Technology/Movie Making style.

Baz Luhrmann stated that his musical film Moulin Rouge was directly inspired by Bollywood musicals, with a direct song sequence from China Gate

And subsequently a host of movies draw inspiration from Moulin Rougelook at some examples Chicago, The Producers, Rent, Dreamgirls, Hairspray, Sweeny Todd, Across the Universe, Mama mia.

_______________________________________________________________

We often criticize bollywood movies coz they don't provide lead roles to good actors/actresses if they are not beautiful (read Fair complexioned), and that we provide room for racial or color based bias.
plzz note that hollywood is probably the only profession which has a black film festival (Oh and they are so fair, unbiased huh).
They say Will Smith is a black actor or morgan freeman is a black actor, ever heard an Indian saying Shahrukh is a muslim actor or Ajay devgan isn't all that fair.

Hmmmm alright so a certain Halley Barry can get a lead role even if she isn't fair oh and a konaka sen sharma aur nandita das cann't get a lead role in bollywood movies just coz she has dark complexion, I beg to differ.
Halley Barry is the first and only black actress to have won an oscar (ie for those of you who actually give value to an oscar, for me a certain movie called "a wednesday" was far better than slumdog.) and oh she isn't all that ugly she is the runner-up in the Miss USA (1986), and winning the Miss USA World (1986) title.
And then lets have a look at the so-called black(we call them dusky) complexioned girls at bollywood Bipasha Bau, Malaika Arora Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Rani Mukharjee, Kajol, Lara dutta, Mughda Godse, Jiah Khan and the list goes on. May-be some of these aren't that big guns but hey Priyanka Chopra or Bips hold the same status in Bollywood as Halley Barry in Hollywood, and the status of Kajor can never be attained by her(excuse me for being rude).

________________________________________________________________

The so-called high status people and the wanna be guys say that they bollywood doesn't portray reality and its all about singing in the rain running around the trees and hollywood always comes up with the great portrayal of reality, they cann't digest the action sequences of Shahrukh khan in Main hoon naa, or that of Krish..... Come-on guys the action sequence in matrix, rambo, rocky, superman, batman, spiderman (think of any damn name and add a man to it :P) and the like are so much believable isn't it.
And oh Hollywood is all so much about real people, real incidents and bolywood ,yuk its all about fantasy ........ Have you guys ever seen a Bandit Queen or a Legend of Bhagat Singh, then the same guys will ask how many movies of this kind are made in bollywood, hmmm good question but then how many movies of this kind are made in Hollywood......

___________________________________________________________________

There ain't any-one like so and so of Hollywood in Bollywood...
Wow really!!!! Tell me one thing "Can you compare Mozart with Tansen ???" If your answer is yes I bow out to you.
If your answer is no, we can further look into it.
People talk about Al Pacino, Morgan Freeman.... yeah, they are excellent actors but then have you seen a certain Naseeruddin Shah, or a Irfaan Khaan or a Om puri or Manoj Bajpeyi....
People will object that none of these is a lead actor but then in how many movies MorganFreeman was a lead actor....

So hollywood has excellent directors like Steven Spielberg, francis d coppola, clint eastwood ....
Hmmm but may be there was some-one called Satyajit ray in India and he was followed by Guru datt,Mrinal Sen,Ritwik Ghatak in the past and guys like Ashutosh Gowarikar and Mani ratnam in present.

___________________________________________________________________

Hollywood has excellent technology and Bollywood can never compare with it ....
This one is my favorite...
Since when did the genius of art depended on technolgy... Is Godfather or Citizen Kane less insightfull then Star-wars....
or the music of mozart inferior then that of ricky martin and co.
can tools like photoshop/picture manager create art tht can make Picasso blink.

And by the way just for the information of the readers the largest film studio in the world Ramo Ji city is based in Hyderabad and unfortunately Hyderabd isn't in USA or for that matter any western and developed country.

Comments/Thrashes/Abuses/Debates all are welcome but plz if you want to give something BE READY TO TAKE ITS RETURN .....
Ranjeet Pratap Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12281032997703397175noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7194097931688959515.post-40348535937252344312009-06-29T21:44:00.002+05:302009-06-29T22:38:10.646+05:30Should I change or Should I not !!!!Everybody has his/her weakness, and I am no exception to it. And talking about them I have a long list. I am arrogant, I am talkative, I am egoist, I am way too informal, and I don't usually give a damn about those whom I dislike.

But then the good thing is that I know about all these negative traits of mine, so after listening to a lot many suggestions from people about whom I do care, I thought why don't I try to change myself. To change myself into a normal being who listens to and agrees to a lot many things he/she knows are incorrect, who doesn't laugh at some-one even if he/she is saying or doing something utter crap. Now one cann't change oneself in a night so from past 3-4 years I was trying to have these traits in myself. As of now I have been able to change myself so much so that if some-body is giving some crappish gyan I just manage to have a smile without uttering a word(as far as I can resist).

But then some-how I began realizing that no matter how hard you are trying to improve yourself, you will always have people criticizing you for one thing or the other, and if you are restricting yourself from making comments on others then you will find a lot many people passing them on you, and of-course the Public is there to laugh at every such opportunity without even trying to figure out who was the dumber one.

And more-ever no matter how much you have improved, or how much CIVILIZED you have became, they will always come out with dialogues like "you anyways never accept anybody else's view" or "don't talk with him, he never agrees" or something else like that, and when you are actually taking pain of changing your-self just because you don't want your closed ones to feel hurt.(Though I understand that it must be happening quite a few times and I sincerely apolize for the same). So its then that you actually feel hurt, you feel like killing youself coz you are trying to be like NORMAL guys and you are constraining yourself from saying something that may hurt them.

Now, the dillema that I face now is that whether the effort that I am trying to put in changing myself from being myself to a NORMAL guy is actually worth the juice.
And I don't think that it actually is.
I am already feeling that I have lost the touch of magnificient spontaneity and God like confidence which allowed me to be care-free even one hour prior to the board exam, playing cricket and dreaming, which allowed me to be a hope of the school in case of any improptu occasion where a speech had to be given or a thought to be read.
Plus atleast I didn't feel bad when some-one came out with the same dialogues I described earlier coz I knew that this was the way I wanted to be.

With the negatives of this change discussed lets come to the positive ones.
You feel good that you are changing, yes the feeling of doing something is actually good. People who knew you from long time get surprised when they see the new you and this feeling is as good as the earlier one. And the last and the most important one though probablity of hurting your beloved ones is there in both conditions its much less if you are NORMAL.

And though I don't care much about it, but yeah a lot many people start coming in contact with you, thus giving an illusion of a larger and hence better (not for me) friend circle.

Now plzzz if anyone of you can suggest which way should I go, I will be really glad.
Ranjeet Pratap Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12281032997703397175noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7194097931688959515.post-13094378693038533482009-04-14T18:40:00.002+05:302009-04-14T19:25:03.539+05:30Why you should not VOTE !!!!!First things first, so before trying to justify why I am saying "u should not vote" even though a lot of celebrities are trying to make a statement of why you should, let's just stop and ask a question to ourselves what is the purpose of voting ? Why is it that we are proud to say voting is not only my right but also my duty?

Is it that because we are living in a democracy and it is we who have the right to decide who governs us (or OUR country), OR is it because we have a right to be aware of the policies under which our future generations will be breathing, OR is it because we want to elect some-one who will be doing good for us(read our city/constituency) in particular and the country in general.

Lets talk about all these dreamy and flashy hopes. Lets say I am someone who thinks the Congress(or the UPA) has done good in building hopes for the country by the nuclear deal, establishing new IITs, IIMs and setting up reservation for those who deserve (?) it.
But do we have a guaranty that it won't be allying with SP who thinks there should be no English education, no computers, or with a Left Front which has its foundation laid on anti-America policy.

Or may be I am someone who thinks its BJP which is the party I want to be in power, but then again do we have any idea of who will constitute the ruling alliance(don't be too optimistic BJP alone cann't be in power). The BJP has already denied any alliance with BSP/SP/BJD so who is it that it will be allying with. Even if we don't even talk about the defamed speeches of Varun Gandhi or Ashok Sahu or yogi Adityanath, we don't really know how a certain Nitish Kumar would be working with a Narendra Modi, whom he is not even ready to share the satge with.

Or may be I am someone who thinks its the third or the fourth front that should be the governing body, but do we have any idea about their joint manifesto or can we even predict that they won't REALLY be supporting any of the two bigger parties(read BJP or Congress).

So the big question tht now remains is " Who is it we should vote for OR more generally what is it we should vote for"...
drop in ur ideas in the comments and lets c if we can find out the answer.Ranjeet Pratap Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12281032997703397175noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7194097931688959515.post-19317391947775927412009-04-12T22:20:00.004+05:302009-04-12T22:39:50.765+05:30BELL ThE CATCommon Admission Test or CAT as it is popularly known as, is one of the most competitive exam of India and is initial selection(or rather rejection phase) for some of the most premier Management Institutes including the prestigious IIMs.

More than 3 lakh students try for a meager 1500 -2000 seats.

Lets c whats it tht takes to "bell the CAT" ...

Questions in CAT can be classified as follows
1. And at mozilla its those people who help in designing and developing the browser. But this is just one face of the coin, though mozilla enjoys a very large fan(user)base still if we try to realize just how good it is, it becomes evident that it is not utilising that much of userbase as it should have.
To increase the userbase of mozilla the target audience may be charatorised in the following three categories.
i.) Those people who don't download mozilla and hence don't use it at all.
ii.) Those people who download mozilla but either don't install it or don't use it over time.
iii.) Those people who have many browsers and they are using different browsers for different purposes such as surfing/banking services etc.
Now based on these target audiences we have the following goals
i.) Let the people who don't download mozilla know that what they are missing by not trying mozilla.
ii.) Retain the users who are not using mozilla even after downloading or installing it.
iii.) Let the people realize that everything they can do with any other web-browser you can do with mozilla firefox and with more ease, efficiency and fun.
iv.) Concentrating on markets where the internet is still in developing stage and where the large part of growing number of browsers reside(particularly in India and China).
To get these goals we have three key assets.
(i) Open Source Project. As in mythology the greatest advantage that mozilla enjoys lies in its own spirit. By being an open source project it acts as a platform for thousands of talented people from all over the world contributing for its designing and development.
(ii.)Community Support. The second key advantages that mozilla enjoys is the very strong community support. There are a lot of 3rd party applicaitons popularly termed as add-ons which make Mozilla the wonderful web browser it is.
(iii.)Mozilla foundation itself. The popularity that mozilla has gained and the faith that it has earned is one of the most important asset of mozilla and it can be utilised for our goal of making it "the web browser of the new technological world".
Now when we have our target audiences identified and our goals quantified lets see what must be done in order to achieve them.
(i). Sponcor and participate in Techno-management-fests : People love to use a product or service if they can personally attach themselves to it. If mozilla sponcors some technical events in 5 IITs n similar colleges in India it will not only get 2500-3000 extremely talented people to be working for the further development of mozilla, rather it will also give the best form of exposure, word of mouth publicity they will invite each and every one they know to come, see and use their work. And we know that People use a browser(or for that matter any service) when they find out that everybody around them is using it and loving it,when they find out they this is something which
is so close to them and that its so much related to them they tend to use it, and they carry a lot of people with them.
(ii). Social Networking Sites : Social networking sites like orkut/myspace are among the sites recieving most traffic now a days and having active participation on these sites help them people feel that it is something very close to them instead of just posting mozilla related blogs/news only on mozilla blog make active forums/communities on orkut and myspace and get more connected to people.
(iii.) Invite People for challanges : People love challanges( remember the cola war at time of John Scully), finad out the best points of mozilla and then ask people what is that other browsers can do and mozilla cann't and then let the results be big and discussed.
(iv). Change the Way of Advertising : The common pay-per-click type advertisements don't affect the reach of browser much anyways. [http://blog.mozilla.com/metrics/2008/09/16/do-ads-driving-firefox-downloads-affect-firefox-downloads/ ] So a better option would be if a few famous sites hold a banner like "This site is best viewed in Mozilla Firefox". This kind of advertisements attract the users very quickly coz they make users confident that mozilla is a versatile browser while others are not.
(v).Change the way Firefox is Bundeled : Instead providing the user with the browser and then requiring him to download addons that he need to get the best of mozilla a better option would be to attach a few add-ons which help the user realize that "just how good a browser, mozilla is ". coz the mozilla blog identifies that the number of users using mozilla for the first week is close to people using it a longer period of time, if we make it easy for a novice to come, download, install and use the browser for a few days before he decides that now he needs some more, he will definately be more than willing to give it a try.
These five steps if taken tact-fully will no doubt help in transforming mozilla from a Great Web Browser to The Greatest Web Browser.Ranjeet Pratap Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12281032997703397175noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7194097931688959515.post-81096807643753273342008-09-03T21:57:00.002+05:302008-09-03T23:17:59.376+05:30GooGle CHROME : ThE next BIG thing .
To most people, it isn't the browser that matters. At one extreme there are guys who believe that in a world where firefox, safari and IE provide a wide range of choice to the consumers, chrome won't make much a difference, and on the other extreme there are guys who think that Google Chrome along with the extremely powerfull Google Gears is making a way for the device-side operating system that supports web applications, just the way Windows supports device-based applications. It was where her nightmares started - the pain, the agony. The floor was safer

"Don't trust the police- they are bad" - trust me - the man with the golden voice softly told her
as she stood one evening - shivering in the cold in the bus shelter. She had run away from the place she called home - it was a home the local adoptive agency had bundled off to -
Her foster parents had no love for her - but for the money ,the State paid for her upkeep and for their "inconvenience", they had undying love.

The State was glad to be rid of her. Life at the foster home was not bad- but not good either - she was just a number in that house. She was neitherattractive nor plain - just another kid. They hardly cared if she was alive or not - only thing was that she was never abused. Still she wanted out.

One evening she did just that. Walked out .Aimlessly she wandered the streets - a young, frail thing - All she had in her possession was the dress she wore - a couple of odds and ends - a packet of cigarettes and a little money that she took from the house -

She knew her foster parents would never seek her out - maybe when the Social Worker paid them a visit on hearing that she was missing - they would weep copious tears. They would bawl away saying how ungrateful she was after the love and attention they showered on her. The Social Worker would nod her head but knowing fully well the parents were whining about the money they lost. Then again they would find another kid and the money would flow again.

Towards evening, legs aching, she sat at an abandoned bus shelter - wondering what her future would be, and never having a clue what her past was. It was then that the man with the golden voice approached her. She never heard the big car arrive - its engine quiet as the whisper of the evening breeze.

He smiled the most beautiful smile she had ever seen and asked her point blank "Runaway, right?"
She looked at him smiled and said "yes"."You don't want to go to the cops, you can never trust them. They will send you back"She looked at him and asked "Do you know where else I could go or who else with?"

"Sure, I know this family who could take care of you, with lots of love and warmth. Without blinking an eye she got into the car with him - not for a moment caring where she was going or who the guy way.

They drove through the night - she slept curled in the back seat of the car - and then he had gently woke her up . "We have arrived", he said simply. She rubbed the sleep out of her eyes and saw this lovely house. "This will be your new home,at least for some time", he said. She knew her foster parents would not care where she was - they would simply tell the State Agency that she ran away - and how ungrateful she was causethey had taken such good care of her. The would whine about the money they lost- but the state would send them someone else to replace her.

He rang the doorbell and a grandmotherly lady opened the door. "Hi Nicholas", she addressed the man how nice to see you". "C'mon in ". "And who is this with you"?
"She needs a home, love and care, Maggie", said Nicholas.
"Awww c'mon you poor thing", let us fix you a bath so you can freshen up and, I have clothes at the top that belongs to Annette. You could use them".

She thanked Maggie and had a wonderful, hot shower, put on the clothes and went down to join Nicholas and Maggie."Honey," Maggie said - "I don't want you to go out for some time lest, someone recognizes you and sends you backto you home, which I know you don't want to go to". She nodded her head.

She lost track of time - was it four year five years - was she 16 was she 14? - she never knew - she had never stepped out of the house on her own - Maggie made sure of that - Nicholas or some other guy was always with her and the other three girls who lived in the house.

From a child to a woman overnight- that is what she became - from a child to a piece of flesh that was used and abusedover and over again. At nights when they grunted and groaned over her body, she would cry silent tears - wishing and praying that no other girl would have to go through this - but then she knew - There was always a Nicholas and a Maggie who made
sure there was a constant supply and ....... and there was always this little soul that suffered..

p.s. -> i have read the story some time back ,somewhere in this immense sea of internet, i accept that i was really dumbstruck after reading it and couldn't fightback the idea of placing it here in my words so that may be there is something that can lessen the suffering of that little soul . ameen......

Ranjeet Pratap Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12281032997703397175noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7194097931688959515.post-30883753102615228362008-08-12T03:38:00.004+05:302008-08-12T03:52:25.971+05:30Age Of Empires

The most basic thing about age of empires and about any other game is that u need to know that you hate losing..........
coz " the one who says that losing and winning doesn't matters probably never wins".

Age of empires is arguably the best online strategy game developed so far.

Its a game where you really get the feeling of being a king or rather a god of your own kingdom .You decide when and where and what and how your villagers or your army works. But its not a game ........... its ThE GAME.
there is someone who is more than eager to put your men to death and it is ofcourse the last thing in your mind to lose such a position of being a god to a ruined king.

When i came into KIIT i have never ever heard of this name Age Of Empires or AOE as the players call it, but then i've seen guys playing it and the idea of ruing somthing, having something where your rules are the final makes a point(isn't it ) so i thought of giving it a try , thx to a close frnd who placed some comment on my gaming caliber i took loosing a bit seriously and gradually got into those who didn't liked the game(?) nor do they loved it(??) but htose who lived it (:O). Well now when the fever is off i thought may be i should some of the things which i've learned a few things from net, few from more experienced players (like watching the videos of chris and daut),few from my frnds who played really gud and a good share of them by experimenting.

So for those of you who have a crush on this beautiful game try out the following link.

http://brainmasterrohit.googlepages.com/ageofempires

Ranjeet Pratap Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12281032997703397175noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7194097931688959515.post-90442213858213508152008-07-22T02:05:00.000+05:302008-07-22T02:51:04.436+05:30A team of 5 individuals or 5 individuals of a team ???Just a few days back , i was doing a project with my friends ,it was then that while having a cup of coffee {as u know a cup of coffee in the night at 1:00 am opens all the closed doors of mind} i felt like "yes , now we are working as a team ,well a team of 5 persons, 5 individuals (?) ".
But then the ever-doubtful mind fired back to me is it a team of five individuals or is it that we are five individuals of the team. The question might seem absurd but it gives a lot of thought to ponder about .

A team of individuals{forget about 5 now } means that there are more than one centers of power in the team and though it does have certain disadvantages but its one thing which enhances the level of creativity in the team members. U cann't think positively if you know that there is someone who is always there to instruct you that this is what you have to do,this is how you have t do and this is when you have to do. Well, I tell you what I think in such a situation, I think "ok, so if u r so intelligent and i am such a dumb why are you asking me to do that ??? come on and do it yourself."And no, I am not far from the truth when I say that this is the majority thinks. And thats why todays entrepreneurs try to involve their employees into the mainstream to let them believe that they are a part of the company and not just a paid worker.
When this feeling of my company comes into existence the result is that people get to work independently and thats when the real Creativity comes out .Enrichment of the leadership qualities , and increase in amount of quality productive work are some of the positive results which may be seen if the relation between a team (or a company) and its members(employees) is that of "A team of individuals".

But this is just one side of a coin, the adverse side of the above relation shows that whenever the team-member relation is of the form" A team of individuals" , the feeling of team-spirit becomes feeble and the problem of clashing egos ,cold wars of ideas come into the picture and even worse, the new members of the team don't get enough chances to learn from the experience of the old members. So the other kind of relation which may exist in between a team and its members may be of "Individuals of a team". Here all the individuals work together to form the back-end of the team .They might be separate individuals for an outsiders but the team works in a state of bonding ,this coherency between various members of a team generates a feeling of co-operation and team-spirit, a feeling of being secure ,a feeling that "there are people to back me up ,to support me" generates a lot of self-confidence in the individuals . This is like having a "Sachin Tendulkar " in the team .

So, there are goods and their are bads of both the relations, the big question that stays on such a situation is what kind of relation should i try to develop in my fellow-mates if i were to have a company or for that matter any team.

Well, a perfect answer is never possible to any kind of question and this is no exception. But if i were to give an answer i will like to have a balance of the two kinds of relations. You have to have a feeling of team spirit within the people who work together and whose jobs are directly related to each other more so because these are the people who can share their knowledge and experience among them. But when we are talking about people who interact only once in a fortnight and who are complete(or almost complete ) in their jobs with their small set of team (say a part of the company) need more of the feeling of independence the felling of being free from constrained thinking the freedom to think independently and frankly, to have innovation and to show creativity.
So in a nutshell this is what i deduced as my mug of coffee was almost empty and i had a few unanswered chat boxes waiting for my reply .
"
Within a department/section of the company where the employees have related jobs a relation of the kind "individuals of a team " provides a better outlook .But the different parts of the company should be organised like small teams and these teams make the company implementing " a team of individuals". Here everybody is in a kind of relation with his mates, he feels secure but at the same time he knows that no"Tom,Dick N Harry "is going to come and ask him to do something that way just because he likes it that way or worse if thats because this is the way he has read about the things working....".Ranjeet Pratap Singhhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12281032997703397175noreply@blogger.com0
